Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter
Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 1.8 (that is 9/5), then add 32. So 20 °C is 68 °F, 37 °C is 98.6 °F and 180 °C is 356 °F. Fahrenheit to Celsius: take away 32, then multiply by 5/9, so 350 °F is 176.67 °C. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15.
Type a temperature, pick its unit, and the converter shows it in Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin at once. Readings below absolute zero (−273.15 °C, −459.67 °F) are refused, because nothing can be colder. At sea level, water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F).
Celsius to Fahrenheit chart for weather
Forecasts move in steps of 5 °C, and each step is 9 °F. That makes the chart easy to rebuild from memory: start at 0 °C = 32 °F and add 9 for every 5 degrees.
| °C | °F | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| −10 | 14 | Hard frost, heavy coat |
| 0 | 32 | Freezing point |
| 5 | 41 | Cold, winter jacket |
| 10 | 50 | Chilly, light jacket |
| 15 | 59 | Cool spring day |
| 20 | 68 | Mild, room temperature |
| 25 | 77 | Warm |
| 30 | 86 | Hot |
| 35 | 95 | Very hot |
| 40 | 104 | Heat-wave level |
Body temperature works the same way. A normal reading of 37 °C is 98.6 °F, and doctors usually treat 38 °C (100.4 °F) and above as a fever.
The formulas
| Conversion | Formula |
|---|---|
| Celsius to Fahrenheit | °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 |
| Fahrenheit to Celsius | °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 |
| Celsius to Kelvin | K = °C + 273.15 |
| Kelvin to Celsius | °C = K − 273.15 |
| Fahrenheit to Kelvin | K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 |
| Kelvin to Fahrenheit | °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 |
| Absolute zero | −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F = 0 K |
Worked example: a 350 °F oven in Celsius
Say an American cookie recipe asks for an oven at 350 °F, but your oven dial is marked in Celsius. Start by taking 32 away from 350, which leaves 318. Multiply 318 by 5 and divide by 9 to get 176.67 °C.
Most Celsius dials move in steps of 5 or 10 degrees, so you would set 175 °C or 180 °C. For a lab note you might want Kelvin too. Adding 273.15 to 176.67 gives 449.82 K.
Result: 350 °F = 176.67 °C = 449.82 K.

Common mistakes
- Writing °K. Kelvin has no degree sign: a warm room is about 295 K, never 295 °K.
- Adding 32 before multiplying. A friend in Madrid says it is 20 °C. Add 32 first and you get 93.6 °F, a heat wave. Multiply first and you get the right answer, 68 °F, a mild spring day.
- Trusting double-and-add-30 on hot days. The shortcut turns 20 °C into 70 °F, close enough for choosing a jacket, but it makes 30 °C into 90 °F when the real figure is 86 °F.
- Adding 32 to a change in temperature. A forecast that is 10 °C warmer is 18 °F warmer. The 32 only applies to a reading, not to a difference.
Celsius to Fahrenheit in Excel or Google Sheets
In a spreadsheet, put the reading in A2. The plain formula and Excel's own CONVERT function give the same answer, so use whichever you can remember.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Celsius to Fahrenheit | =A2*9/5+32 or =CONVERT(A2,"C","F") |
| Fahrenheit to Celsius | =(A2-32)*5/9 or =CONVERT(A2,"F","C") |
| Celsius to Kelvin | =A2+273.15 |
| Fahrenheit to Kelvin | =(A2-32)*5/9+273.15 |
| Round to one decimal | =ROUND((A2-32)*5/9,1) |
Celsius and Fahrenheit questions
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and then add 32. A hotel pool heated to 25 °C works out at 45 plus 32, which is 77 °F.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Take 32 away and multiply the rest by 5/9. A child with a 102 °F fever leaves 70 after the subtraction, and 70 × 5 ÷ 9 is about 38.9 °C on a European thermometer.
What is 1 degree Celsius in Fahrenheit?
A reading of 1 °C equals 33.8 °F, just above freezing. If the weather warms up by 1 °C, though, the Fahrenheit reading climbs by 1.8 degrees, because the 32 only matters for a reading.
What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?
It is exactly 356 °F. Many oven recipes in Celsius use 180 °C, and US recipes give about the same setting as 350 °F.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
The two scales meet at −40. A winter night in northern Canada at −40 °C would show −40 °F on an American thermometer as well.
