Hours to Decimal Calculator (Minutes to Decimal)
Hours and minutes → decimal
Decimal → hours and minutes
Payroll and invoicing tools usually ask for hours as a decimal. So a 7:45 day has to go in as 7.75. Put your hours and minutes into the converter above, or give it a decimal such as 6.4 and it shows the clock time, which is 6:24.
Quick answer: Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the whole hours. A day of 7 hours 45 minutes goes in as 7.75, and 8 hours 20 minutes as 8.33. To read a decimal back as time, multiply the part after the point by 60. So 0.75 of an hour is 45 minutes.

Worked example: a week of hours for payroll
Picture a five-day week of 7:45, 8:20, 6:50, 8:05 and 7:30 at $18 an hour. Added up as clock time, those five days come to 38 hours 30 minutes. The hours and minutes adder totals a week like this if you would rather not do it by hand.
Only now does anything get divided. Thirty minutes is half an hour. So the week goes into payroll as 38.50 hours, and the gross pay is $693.00.
Some people convert every day first and round each one to two places. That route gives 38.49 hours, a hundredth of an hour less, and the gap grows over a year of timesheets.
Result: 38:30 is 38.50 decimal hours, or $693.00 at $18 an hour.

Convert time to decimal in Excel or Google Sheets
Spreadsheets keep a time as a slice of a day, so 7:45 is really stored as 0.3229. Multiplying by 24 turns that slice into hours. The same formulas work in Google Sheets.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Time in A2 as decimal hours | =A2*24 (format the cell as Number) |
| Same, rounded for payroll | =ROUND(A2*24,2) |
| Hours in A2, minutes in B2 | =A2+B2/60 |
| Decimal hours in A2 back to time | =A2/24 (format as [h]:mm) |
Mistakes to avoid on a timesheet
The most common slip is reading 7.45 as 7:45. As a decimal, 7.45 hours is only 7 hours 27 minutes. 7 hours 45 minutes should be written 7.75.
Another one is dividing minutes by 100. Thirty minutes is half an hour, so it is 0.50, and twenty minutes is 0.33, not 0.20.
Unpaid breaks come off before you convert. A 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM day with a 30-minute lunch is 8:00 of work. So it goes in as 8.00 hours rather than 8.50.

Hours and minutes to decimal: questions
Most of these come from people filling in a timesheet or checking a paycheck line by line.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Say a shift ran 40 minutes past the hour. Divide 40 by 60 and you get 0.67, so a day of 8 hours 40 minutes goes in as 8.67. Payroll staff see 8.40 written instead all the time, and it quietly shortens the pay.
Is 7:30 the same as 7.3 on a timesheet?
No, and that mix-up costs people money. Half an hour is 0.5 of an hour, so 7:30 goes in as 7.5. Writing 7.3 would knock 12 minutes off the day.
What is 45 minutes as a decimal?
Three quarters of an hour, so 0.75. A Monday of 6 hours 45 minutes is entered as 6.75. A Friday of 8 hours 45 minutes goes in as 8.75.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes as a decimal?
It goes on the timesheet as 7.5. The same pattern gives 8.25 for 8 hours 15 minutes, because a quarter hour is 0.25 of an hour.
How do I convert decimal hours back to time?
Take the part after the point and multiply it by 60. A bill showing 7.75 hours works out to 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so the job took 7:45. Big weekly totals behave the same way, and 40.5 hours is 40:30.
How many decimal places should payroll use?
Most payroll software takes two, such as 8.33, though some systems want quarter hours instead, so check what yours expects. Either way, total the week in hours and minutes before you convert, and convert once.
How do I work out pay from decimal hours?
Multiply the decimal hours by the hourly rate. Someone on $18 an hour who worked 38.50 hours earns $693.00. If the hours were typed as 38.30 by mistake, the check would come out at $689.40, a few dollars short.
Do I round clock punches before converting?
Yes, if your workplace rounds punches to the nearest quarter hour. Round first, then convert, so a punch at 8:07 that becomes 8:00 is counted from 8:00. The time clock rounding calculator applies the common 7-minute rule.
