About Fourth of July
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia approved the Declaration of Independence. It had voted to split from Britain two days before, on July 2. The Fourth became a federal holiday in 1870.
Banks, post offices, federal offices and the stock market close, and there is no mail. Most stores and restaurants stay open. People hold parades, barbecues and picnics, and most towns put on fireworks after dark. The big ones are Macy's in New York, the National Mall in Washington and the Boston Pops on the Esplanade. Nathan's hot dog eating contest at Coney Island runs that day too.
