Hours between punches
Type a four-digit military time to see it in standard AM/PM time, or pick two punches to get the hours between them. For example, 1745 is 5:45 PM, and 0830 is 8:30 AM. The second box takes off an unpaid break and gives decimal hours for payroll.
Quick answer: Military time is a 24-hour clock written as four digits without a colon. From 0100 to 1159, read the hour as it is and add AM (0830 = 8:30 AM, 1130 = 11:30 AM). From 0001 to 0059 the hour is 12 AM (0045 = 12:45 AM). 1200 is noon. From 1300 to 2359, subtract 1200 and add PM (1745 = 5:45 PM). 0000 is midnight, or 12:00 AM.
This page is both a military time converter and a military time calculator. Use the first box for a single time, and the chart below for a quick look-up. The second box is for shift hours. An out time earlier than the in time is read as the next day.
Worked example: a night shift written in military time
Picture a hospital aide whose timesheet shows 2245 in and 0715 out, with a 30-minute unpaid break. In standard time, she started at 10:45 PM and left at 7:15 AM the next morning.
The shift crossed midnight, so it helps to split it. From 2245 to 0000 is 1 hour 15 minutes. From 0000 to 0715 is another 7 hours 15 minutes. Together that is 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock. Taking off the break leaves 8 hours, or 480 minutes.
Result: 8:00 worked, or 8.00 decimal hours.

Reading minutes and Zulu time
The last two digits of military time are always minutes. They never change when you convert. So 1415 is 2:15 PM, and 2359 is 11:59 PM, one minute before midnight.
Military messages often add a letter for the time zone. Z stands for Zulu, which is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). So 1500Z is 3:00 PM in UTC, not local time. To turn that into Eastern or Pacific time, use the time zone converter.
Payroll staff often see a third form, decimal hours. A shift from 0845 to 1730 is 8 hours 45 minutes, which is 8.75 hours, not 8.45. The hours to decimal calculator turns any minutes into the decimal form.
Military time in Excel or Google Sheets
Type military times as plain numbers or text, such as 1745 or 0830, in column B. These formulas turn them into real times you can format and add up.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Military time in B2 to a time value | =TIME(INT(B2/100),MOD(B2,100),0) |
| Military time to AM/PM text | =TEXT(TIME(INT(B2/100),MOD(B2,100),0),"h:mm AM/PM") |
| Standard time in A2 to military text | =TEXT(A2,"hhmm") |
| Hours between B2 and C2, overnight safe | =MOD(TIME(INT(C2/100),MOD(C2,100),0)-TIME(INT(B2/100),MOD(B2,100),0),1)*24 |
| Same, minus break minutes in D2 | =MOD(TIME(INT(C2/100),MOD(C2,100),0)-TIME(INT(B2/100),MOD(B2,100),0),1)*24-D2/60 |
Subtracting 0845 from 1730 as plain numbers gives 885, which is wrong. The TIME step fixes that by treating the last two digits as minutes.
Common mistakes
- Subtracting the digits directly. 1730 − 0845 = 885 as plain numbers. The real gap is 8 hours 45 minutes (8.75 hours), because each hour has 60 minutes, not 100.
- Mixing up noon and midnight. 1200 is 12:00 PM (noon). 0000 is 12:00 AM (midnight).
- Typing 2400. Some schedules write 2400 for the end of a day, but this calculator uses 0000 for midnight.
- Forgetting overnight shifts. A shift from 2200 to 0600 is 8 hours, not a negative number. The out time belongs to the next day.
- Treating the last two digits as a decimal. In 1730 the 30 is minutes. As a decimal hour of the day it is 17.50, not 17.30.
Military time questions
How do I convert military time to standard time?
Times from 0000 to 1159 are AM, and 0000 is 12:00 AM. 1200 is 12:00 PM. For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour, so 1745 is 5:45 PM.
How do I convert standard time to military time?
Morning times keep their hour and gain a leading zero, so 8:15 AM is 0815. Afternoon and evening hours get 12 added, which makes 4:30 PM into 1630. Just after midnight, 12:45 AM becomes 0045, while 12:45 PM stays 1245.
What is 1500 in regular time?
It is 3:00 PM. Take 12 away from the hour of any time from 1300 to 2359, then add PM.
What is 8 PM in military time?
A dinner shift ending at 8 PM ends at 2000. Every PM hour from 1 to 11 gains 12, so 6 PM is 1800, 7 PM is 1900 and 11:30 PM is 2330.
What is 12 AM in military time?
Midnight, 12:00 AM, is written 0000, and half past midnight is 0030. Noon is 1200.
How do I calculate hours worked in military time?
Turn both times into hours and minutes and subtract them, adding 24 hours if the shift crosses midnight. A shift from 0845 to 1730 lasts 8:45, which payroll writes as 8.75 hours before any unpaid break.
Can it work out hours between two military times with lunch?
Yes. Pick the in and out times, then type the unpaid lunch minutes in the break box. A shift from 0700 to 1530 with a 30-minute lunch comes to 8 paid hours.
Is military time the same as 24-hour time?
Both use the same 24-hour clock. Military time is usually four digits without a colon, like 1745, while 24-hour time often has one, as in 17:45. The converter box takes the four-digit form.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
This converter uses 0000, the start of a new day. Some schedules write 2400 for the end of a day, so 2400 on Monday is the same moment as 0000 on Tuesday.
How do you say military time out loud?
Read the four digits as two pairs. People usually say 0800 as "zero eight hundred" and 1745 as "seventeen forty-five".
