9/80 Calendar: Your Fridays Off

By Sohail Manzoor · Updated

A 9/80 schedule gives you every other Friday off: 80 hours in 9 working days every two weeks, about 26 extra days off a year. Enter one of your Fridays off to list the rest, see which ones a holiday lands on, and add them to your calendar.

9/80 overtime and the FLSA workweek

A 9/80 schedule only stays free of overtime if each 7-day workweek has 40 hours. Employers do this by starting the workweek halfway through the 8-hour Friday, so the first 4 hours count in one week and the last 4 in the next. If the workweek runs Monday to Sunday instead, week one has 44 hours and federal law requires 4 hours of overtime. California also counts daily overtime unless the 9/80 is an adopted alternative workweek schedule.

Week 29999off36 (40 with the split)

For overtime, US employers start the 7-day workweek in the middle of the 8-hour Friday, so 4 of its hours count in week 1 and 4 in week 2. Each workweek then has exactly 40 hours (29 CFR 778.105 allows any fixed starting time). Without that split, week 1 has 4 hours of overtime.

9/80 schedule questions

How does a 9/80 schedule work?

Over two weeks you work 80 hours in 9 days: eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour day, and take every other Friday off. Week one is Monday to Thursday at 9 hours plus an 8-hour Friday; week two is Monday to Thursday at 9 hours with Friday off.

How many days off do you get on a 9/80?

26 extra Fridays off a year (27 in some years), on top of weekends and holidays.

Does a 9/80 schedule cause overtime?

Not if the employer starts the workweek halfway through the 8-hour Friday (after 4 hours), so each 7-day workweek has exactly 40 hours. If the workweek simply runs Sunday to Saturday instead, the week with the working Friday has 44 hours, and the extra 4 are overtime under the FLSA. California requires an adopted alternative workweek for 9-hour days without daily overtime.

What happens when a holiday falls on my 9/80 Friday off?

Policies differ: many employers give another day off or 8 hours of holiday pay to use later. Check your employer's 9/80 policy.
