Overtime Pay Calculator

Daily 8 + weekly 40 only applies to some workers: in Alaska, employers with 4 or more employees (AS 23.10.060); in Nevada, employees paid less than 1.5 times the state minimum wage, unless they agreed to four 10-hour days (NRS 608.018). Other workers there get weekly overtime only.

For daily rules, enter hours for each day. Daily 8 uses these boxes, not the week total.

Enter the hours you worked and your hourly rate, and this overtime calculator splits them into regular pay, time and a half and double time. At $20 an hour, a 46-hour week is 40 regular hours ($800) plus 6 overtime hours at $30 ($180), so $980 before tax. Switch the rule to daily overtime for California and similar states. If the week is not over yet, the overtime planner shows how many hours are left until overtime.

Most jobs in the US use the weekly 40 rule, so it is the default. Workers in California can switch to the California preset, which counts each day too. Colorado has its own preset, and there are daily 8 plus weekly 40 and daily-only options. Type the week's total, or fill in each day when daily overtime applies.

Quick answer: Multiply each overtime hour by your hourly rate and by 1.5. Federal law gives nonexempt employees at least that much for every hour over 40 in a workweek. A 46-hour week at $20 pays $800 for the first 40 hours and $180 for the other 6, so $980 in all.

1. Pick a ruleWeekly 40, California, daily 8 + weekly 40, Colorado, or custom.
2. Enter hoursUse the week total, or fill each day.
3. Check the splitRegular, OT, double time, estimated gross.

The figures are gross pay before tax, not legal advice. Your contract or handbook may pay more than the legal minimum.

Weekly vs daily overtime

Under a weekly rule, overtime starts only after a set number of hours in the workweek, usually 40. Under a daily rule, a 10-hour Tuesday already has 2 overtime hours, even if the week ends at 30.

California uses both. Hours over 8 in a workday are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, and hours over 12 in a workday at double time. Regular hours past 40 in the week are overtime too. On the seventh day in a row in one workweek, the first 8 hours are time and a half and the rest are double time. An hour already paid as daily overtime is not counted again toward the weekly 40. The daily-only preset skips the weekly check altogether.

Texas, Florida and most other states follow the federal weekly rule only. Alaska, Nevada and Colorado have their own daily rules, and the presets above cover the common ones.

Worked example: one week, two rules

Dana earns $20 an hour. Her days from Monday to Friday run 10, 9, 8, 13 and 6 hours, which is 46 hours in one workweek.

Under the weekly 40 rule, the first 40 hours pay $800. The 6 hours past 40 pay $30 each, which adds $180. Her gross for the week is $980.

Switch to the California preset (or Daily 8 + double after 12) and the same week pays more. Monday has 2 hours over 8 and Tuesday has 1. Thursday's 13-hour day has 4 hours of overtime and 1 hour of double time. That gives 38 regular hours ($760), 7 overtime hours ($210) and 1 double-time hour ($40).

Result: $980.00 gross under the weekly 40 rule, or $1,010.00 under the daily 8 / double-after-12 preset, before taxes.

Time and a half pay chart

Time and a half is your regular hourly rate times 1.5 for each overtime hour. Double time is the rate times 2. So time and a half for $18 an hour is $27, and for $25 an hour it is $37.50.

Overtime on 12-hour shifts

Under the federal rule, three 12-hour shifts make 36 hours, so that week has no overtime. Four 12-hour shifts make 48 hours, and 8 of them are overtime. A schedule that switches between three and four shifts a week pays overtime only in the four-shift weeks.

California counts the same shifts by the day. Each 12-hour shift has 8 regular hours and 4 hours at time and a half. Any hour past 12 in that day is double time. Some employers in California use an approved alternative workweek schedule, which changes the daily line. The 12-hour shift calculator shows the hours across a full rotation.

Overtime pay in Excel or Google Sheets

For a weekly total, put the hours worked in A2 and the hourly rate in B2. For California daily overtime, put one day's hours in D2 and copy the row down for each day.

What you wantFormula
Overtime hours over 40=MAX(0,A2-40)
Time and a half rate=B2*1.5
Weekly gross with overtime=MIN(40,A2)*B2+MAX(0,A2-40)*B2*1.5
Daily regular hours (up to 8)=MIN(8,D2)
Daily overtime (8 to 12)=MAX(0,MIN(12,D2)-8)
Daily double time (over 12)=MAX(0,D2-12)

The daily formulas leave out California's weekly 40 and seventh-day rules, so use the California preset above for the full split.

Common mistakes

Overtime pay questions

How do I calculate overtime pay?

Multiply the overtime hours by your hourly rate and then by 1.5. Add that to your regular pay for the first 40 hours. At $18 an hour, 44 hours pay $720 plus 4 × $27 = $108, or $828.

What is time and a half?

Each overtime hour pays one and a half times your normal rate. On $20 an hour, 6 overtime hours bring in 6 × $30 = $180 before tax.

How much is time and a half for $20 an hour?

It is $30.00 an hour. Ten overtime hours at that rate pay $300.00 on top of your regular 40 hours.

How do I calculate double time pay?

Multiply the double-time hours by your hourly rate and by 2. In California, double time applies after 12 hours in a day and after 8 hours on the seventh day in a row. Federal law has no double time rule.

Does this California overtime calculator include weekly 40 as well?

The California preset covers both. It pays 1.5× after 8 hours in a day and 2× after 12. Regular hours past 40 in the week get 1.5×, and the seventh-day rule is built in. The day boxes run Monday to Sunday as the workweek.

Is overtime required after 8 hours in a day?

Federal law only looks at the week, so an 11-hour Monday earns no overtime on its own. California and a few other states do require daily overtime.

How is overtime calculated in Texas?

The federal rule applies in Texas, since the state has no overtime law of its own. A worker in Austin who puts in 44 hours gets 4 hours at time and a half. A single 11-hour day does not earn overtime there.

Do you get overtime for working weekends or holidays?

A Saturday shift earns overtime only if it pushes the week past 40 hours. The FLSA has no extra rate for weekends or Thanksgiving, although many employers and union contracts pay one.

How is overtime calculated with two different pay rates?

A common method is the weighted average. Divide total straight-time pay by total hours to get the regular rate, then pay an extra half of that rate for each overtime hour. 30 hours at $20 and 18 hours at $15 give $870 ÷ 48 = $18.125, plus 8 × $9.0625 = $72.50, for $942.50.

Can my employer average my hours over two weeks?

Federal rules count each workweek by itself, even when you are paid every two weeks. A few hospital schedules are the main exception.

Do salaried employees get overtime?

Some do. A salary does not on its own make you exempt. Under the FLSA, exempt employees must also pass a salary-level test and a duties test. Salaried nonexempt employees still get overtime after 40 hours.
