Enter 14 days of clock-in and clock-out times, take off lunch and breaks, and this biweekly timesheet calculator totals the pay period. Overtime is counted for each workweek on its own, not over the full 80 hours. So 44.5 hours in week 1 and 36 in week 2 make 80.5 hours, with 4.5 hours of overtime. It also works as a biweekly time card calculator for payroll. For one week, use the weekly timesheet calculator or the time card calculator. For paper, print a biweekly timesheet template.
Each day takes up to four punch pairs, so split shifts and two unpaid breaks both fit. You can also switch to plain hours, such as 8.5 for a day. Copy week 1 into week 2 when the schedule repeats. Entries save in this browser as you type. Print a signed sheet, download a CSV, or copy a link to the exact timesheet.
Quick answer: A biweekly timesheet covers two workweeks in one pay period. Add up each week on its own and apply overtime to each week separately. Under the federal FLSA, nonexempt workers earn overtime for hours over 40 in a workweek. The two weeks cannot be averaged, even when the period totals 80 hours.
Not legal advice. Some employers use a fixed workweek that does not start on Monday. This page does not treat 80 hours as one overtime bucket.
Worked example: a two-week pay period with lunch
Jordan works Monday to Friday and clocks out for a 30-minute lunch every day. In week 1 he works 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM from Monday to Thursday. That is 9 hours a day after lunch. On Friday he leaves at 5:00 PM, which gives 8.5 hours.
Week 1 comes to 44.5 hours, so 4.5 of them are overtime. Week 2 is quieter. He works 8 hours a day from Monday to Thursday and 4 hours on Friday, for 36 hours and no overtime.
The pay period adds up to 80.5 hours. Only 0.5 hours sit above 80, but that number means nothing for overtime. The 4.5 extra hours from week 1 still count at time and a half.
Result: 80.50 total hours, 76.00 regular and 4.50 overtime.

Lunch, breaks and California rules on a biweekly time card
An unpaid lunch comes off each day before the weeks are added. If you clock out and back in for lunch, enter two punch pairs and leave the break box empty. The gap between the pairs is already unpaid. Short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are paid time under federal rules, so they stay in.
California adds daily overtime on top of the weekly rule. Hours over 8 in a workday are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, and hours over 12 in a day are double time. The seventh day in a row in one workweek has its own rule. Pick the California setting and the calculator applies it to each week of the period.
How many hours are in a biweekly pay period
A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week gives 80 hours per biweekly pay period. A 37.5-hour week gives 75 hours, and a 35-hour week gives 70. Most years have 26 biweekly paydays. Some years have 27, depending on where the paydays fall. The pay period calendars show the paydays for each year.
Biweekly pay is not the same as semimonthly pay. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 times a year. Those periods often split a workweek in two, so overtime still has to be worked out per workweek.
Biweekly hours in Excel or Google Sheets
Lay the 14 days out in rows 2 to 15, with clock-in in B, clock-out in C and unpaid break minutes in D. Daily hours go in column E, so week 1 is E2:E8 and week 2 is E9:E15. Put the hourly rate in H1.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Daily hours with lunch (copy down) | =MOD(C2-B2,1)*24-D2/60 |
| Week 1 total | =SUM(E2:E8) |
| Week 2 total | =SUM(E9:E15) |
| Overtime, counted per week | =MAX(0,SUM(E2:E8)-40)+MAX(0,SUM(E9:E15)-40) |
| Regular hours for the period | =SUM(E2:E15)-(MAX(0,SUM(E2:E8)-40)+MAX(0,SUM(E9:E15)-40)) |
| Gross pay with time and a half | =(SUM(E2:E15)+0.5*(MAX(0,SUM(E2:E8)-40)+MAX(0,SUM(E9:E15)-40)))*H1 |
Common mistakes
- Treating 80 hours as the overtime line. A 50-hour week followed by a 30-hour week is 10 overtime hours, not 0.
- Entering minutes as decimals. These boxes take decimal hours: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 and 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75, not 7.45.
- Putting days in the wrong week. If your workweek runs Sunday to Saturday or Wednesday to Tuesday, enter days in that order so each week matches payroll.
- Taking lunch off twice. When lunch already shows as a gap between two punch pairs, the break box for that day stays empty.
Biweekly time card questions
How do you calculate overtime for a biweekly pay period?
Split the period into its two workweeks and count the hours over 40 in each week. 45 hours in week 1 and 35 in week 2 give 5 overtime hours, even though the period totals 80.
Why isn’t overtime counted after 80 hours?
Federal overtime is counted per workweek. Two 40-hour weeks have no overtime, but two 46-hour weeks have 6 + 6 = 12 overtime hours. Counting only the hours over 80 would miss weeks like 50 and 30.
Is this a biweekly time card calculator?
Yes. Enter clock in and out punches for all 14 days, with up to four punch pairs a day, or switch to hours per day. Each week gets its own subtotal and overtime. Print adds employee and supervisor signature lines, and Download CSV saves the rows.
Can I enter a lunch break and two unpaid breaks?
Yes. Type the unpaid minutes in the break box, or clock out and back in with extra punch pairs. A day with a 30-minute lunch and a second unpaid break can use three punch pairs and an empty break box.
How many hours are in a biweekly pay period?
A full-time 40-hour schedule is 80 hours per biweekly period. Most years have 26 biweekly paydays, and some have 27, depending on where the paydays fall in the calendar.
How are biweekly paychecks calculated?
Multiply the regular hours in the period by the hourly rate. Then add the overtime hours from each week at 1.5 times that rate. At $20 an hour, 76 regular hours and 4.5 overtime hours give $1,520 plus $135, or $1,655 before tax.
Is 80 hours biweekly full time?
Yes, it averages 40 hours a week. 80 hours over two weeks is usually two 40-hour weeks, but 45 and 35 also make 80, and then 5 hours in the first week are overtime under federal law.
What if my workweek does not start Monday?
Set Week starts on to Sunday, Saturday or Monday so the rows follow your employer's workweek. Enter the first day of the period to see the dates on each row.
Can overtime ever be calculated over 14 days?
Only in limited cases. Under FLSA section 7(j), hospitals and residential care facilities may agree with employees to use a 14-day period. Overtime then comes after 8 hours in a day and 80 hours in the period. This calculator uses the standard per-week rule.
