Weekly Timesheet Calculator

Type each day's in and out times, and this weekly timesheet calculator takes off the breaks and adds up your weekly hours. The total shows in hours and minutes and in decimal, with any hours over 40 split off as overtime. It saves in this browser, so you can add each day after your shift. The example week below comes to 38.50 hours. For pay and state overtime rules, use the time card calculator. Two weeks fit on the biweekly timesheet calculator, and a printable timesheet template is there for pen and paper.

Entries save as you type. Copy link shares the week, Download CSV saves it for a spreadsheet, and Print gives a sheet with lines for the employee and the company. The result splits the week into regular hours and overtime over 40, which is the federal rule.

Quick answer: To work out weekly hours, take each day's out time minus its in time and subtract the unpaid break. Then add the days together. Five days of 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch make 40 hours. Payroll uses the decimal form, so 38 hours 30 minutes is 38.50.

1. Type in and out9:00 AM or 17:00 both work.
2. CalculateBlank days stay 0.
3. Save, copy or printSaves on this device only. Copy link, CSV or Print to share.

Worked example: a five-day week with lunch

Sam works an office job and logs each day as it happens. Monday and Thursday run from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch, so each of those days is 8 hours.

Tuesday runs late, from 9:00 AM to 6:15 PM, but the lunch was 45 minutes. That leaves 8 hours 30 minutes. Wednesday starts early at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM with a half-hour lunch, which is another 8 hours.

Friday is short, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with no break, so it adds 6 hours. The week comes to 38 hours 30 minutes. That is under 40, so none of it is overtime.

Result: 38:30 for the week, or 38.50 decimal hours.

Weekly hours with lunch, overtime and overnight shifts

Each row has a break box for unpaid lunch, in minutes. Short paid rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes stay in the hours under federal rules, so leave them out of the box. If you skipped lunch on a day, set that day's break to 0.

Hours over 40 in the week show as overtime. That is the federal FLSA rule for nonexempt workers. California and a few other states also count daily overtime, such as hours over 8 in one day. The time card calculator handles those rules and adds pay.

A night shift goes on the day it started. Type In 10:00 PM and Out 6:00 AM, and the row reads the out time as the next morning. The night shift hours calculator is built for shifts that run across midnight with a meal break.

Weekly hours in Excel or Google Sheets

To keep the same week in a spreadsheet, put in times in B2:B8, out times in C2:C8 and unpaid break minutes in D2:D8. The daily hours go in E2:E8.

Common mistakes

Weekly hours questions

How do I calculate my weekly hours?

Work out each day as out time minus in time minus unpaid breaks, then add the days. Five 8-hour days are 40 hours. Five days of 8 hours 30 minutes are 42.5 hours.

How do I calculate weekly hours with a lunch break?

Take the lunch off each day before you add the week. A day from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock and 8 hours paid after a 30-minute lunch. Enter 30 in that day's break box.

How do I calculate weekly hours in Excel?

Use =MOD(C2-B2,1)*24-D2/60 for each day, with the in time in B2, the out time in C2 and lunch minutes in D2. Then add the seven days with =SUM(E2:E8). The MOD part handles shifts that end after midnight.

How many hours is 9 to 5:30 five days a week?

40 hours with a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day. 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock, so 8 hours paid, and 8 × 5 = 40. With no unpaid lunch it is 42.5 hours, and the 2.5 hours over 40 would be overtime under federal law.

What does decimal hours mean on a timesheet?

Decimal hours show minutes as a fraction of an hour, so 38 hours 30 minutes is 38.50. Payroll multiplies decimal hours by the hourly rate.

How many hours a week is full time?

The federal FLSA does not define full-time or part-time work, so employers usually set it. Separately, the FLSA overtime line for nonexempt employees is 40 hours in a workweek.

Does a workweek have to start on Monday?

No. Under the FLSA a workweek is a fixed, recurring period of 168 hours and can begin on any day and hour. Enter your days in your employer's workweek order.

Where is my timesheet saved?

Only in this browser on this device. It saves as you type. Other phones and computers will not see it unless you use Copy link, which puts the week into the link itself. We do not receive the times.

How is this different from the time card calculator?

This page totals the hours for one week and splits off overtime over 40. The time card calculator adds pay, punch rounding and daily overtime rules such as California's.
