About Diwali

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the biggest Hindu festival, and Sikhs and Jains mark it too. Homes get a deep clean and are lit with small clay oil lamps called diyas. People draw rangoli patterns at the door, set off fireworks and share boxes of sweets. On the main night, families pray to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, after sunset.

Diwali falls on the new moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, so it moves between mid-October and mid-November. It is a public holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Mauritius, Fiji, and Trinidad and Tobago. Our dates are for Lakshmi Puja as kept in New Delhi. Parts of South India mark the main day one day earlier.
