Time conversion chart for payroll
Payroll systems want hours as a decimal, while a time clock shows hours and minutes. The chart turns common minute values into the decimal your software expects.

Take a shift that shows 8:20 on the clock. The 20 minutes are a third of an hour, so payroll needs 8.33 hours. At $18.00 an hour that pays $149.94. Typing 8.20 instead would pay $147.60, which is $2.34 short.
Time conversions in Excel or Google Sheets
Excel stores a time as a fraction of a day, so 12:00 is 0.5. Multiply by 24 for hours and by 1440 for minutes. These formulas assume the time or number is in A2.

Time conversion questions
How do you calculate time conversion?
Use 60 as the step between units. Multiply hours by 60 to get minutes, and divide minutes by 60 to get hours. A day has 24 hours, or 1,440 minutes.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7:45 is 7.75 hours.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. For 6.4 hours, 0.4 × 60 is 24, so the answer is 6 hours 24 minutes.
How do I read military time?
Hours run from 00 to 23. Before noon it matches the clock, so 0900 is 9 a.m. After noon you subtract 12, so 1530 is 3:30 p.m.
Is "time converter" the same as a time zone converter?
