The codes are all built from the same count. January 1 is day 001, and the count runs to 365 on December 31. A Julian date on a box or a form usually means one of the short codes. Astronomers mean the Julian Day Number, a single count of days since 4713 BC.

Convert a date or a Julian date

Sunday, October 18, 2026 is day 291, Julian date 26291.

Codes of 4, 5 or 7 digits all work. With only one or two year digits, the nearest year wins, so 7001 is January 1, 2027.

How to find the day of the year yourself

Add up the days in each full month before the date, then add the date itself. For October 18, the months before October hold 273 days. Add 18 and you get 291.

In Excel or Google Sheets, put the date in A1 and use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0). For the 5-digit code use =TEXT(A1,"yy")&TEXT(A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0),"000"). Christmas lands on day 359 this year.

Julian Day Number and the Julian calendar

The Julian Day Number counts days without a break from noon on January 1, 4713 BC. Joseph Scaliger set up the count in 1583, and astronomers still use it to work out the time between events. The number goes up by one each day at 12:00 UT, not at midnight. Today it is 2,461,332.

For a time of day, astronomers add a fraction. Midnight UT at the start of October 18 is JD 2,461,331.5, and 6 PM UT is JD 2,461,332.25. The Modified Julian Date takes away 2,400,000.5, which gives 61,331 at midnight today.

The Julian calendar is a different thing: the calendar Rome used before the Gregorian reform of 1582. It now runs 13 days behind, so October 18 here is October 5 on the Julian calendar. Some Orthodox churches still keep their feasts by it, which is why their Christmas falls on January 7.

Day of the year questions

What day of the year is it today?

Day 291. Sunday, October 18, 2026 has 290 days of 2026 behind it and 74 ahead.

What is today's Julian date?

26291 in the usual 5-digit form: 26 for the year, 291 for the day. Software that wants all four year digits uses 2026291; astronomers would say JDN 2,461,332.

What is the 3-digit Julian date today?

291, the plain day count padded to three digits. That is the number stamped on US egg cartons as the pack date.

What is the 4-digit Julian date used by the military?

6291 today. One digit of year, three of day, as in the date block of a MILSTRIP requisition number.

How do I turn a Julian date back into a calendar date?

Peel off the last three digits; that is the day of the year. What is left is the year. So 27045 is day 45 of 2027, February 14. Or type it into the converter above.

Is the Julian date the same as the Julian calendar?

No, and the names cause endless mix-ups. One is a day count. The other is Julius Caesar's calendar, 13 days behind ours, where today is October 5.
