Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in Ramadan, and fasting through the month is one of the five pillars of Islam. Ramadan itself isn't a public holiday, but the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries cut working hours during the month.
