Work Hours Calculator

How many hours did I work this week? Fill in a start time, an end time and the unpaid break for each day. This working hours calculator totals every day and the whole week in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Add an hourly rate to see the gross pay too. A day from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch comes to 8 hours. For regular and overtime hours from clock punches, the time card calculator fits better. The weekly timesheet keeps a week saved as you go.

This page totals hours and does not split overtime. Entries stay in this browser as you type. Copy link shares the week, and you can download a CSV or print a signed sheet. For a printable card with regular and overtime hours, use the time card calculator.

Quick answer: For each day, take the start time away from the end time and then take off the unpaid break. If the shift ended after midnight, add 24 hours first. Add the days together for the week, and divide any leftover minutes by 60 when payroll wants decimal hours.

1. Enter each day Blank days count as 0.
2. Subtract lunch Unpaid minutes only.
3. Read the week total Optional rate × decimal hours. No OT split.

How to calculate hours worked

Each day is worked out on its own. The end time minus the start time gives the time on the clock, and the unpaid lunch comes off that. A night shift that ends after midnight simply rolls into the next day. A day with the same start and end counts as 0. The seven days added together are the hours worked for the week, and payroll usually wants that as a decimal. So 8 hours 15 minutes goes in as 8.25.

Worked example: a week with different lunch breaks

Take a week where Monday, Tuesday and Thursday run from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Wednesday is longer, 7:45 AM to 5:15 PM with 45 minutes for lunch. Friday is a half day from 8:00 AM to noon with no break. The pay is $19.50 an hour.

The three standard days are 8 hours each once lunch comes off. Wednesday's 9 hours 30 minutes on the clock drops to 8 hours 45 minutes, and Friday adds 4. Altogether that is 36 hours 45 minutes, which payroll reads as 36.75 hours.

At $19.50 an hour the gross pay is about $716.63 before any tax or deductions.

Result: 36:45 worked, or 36.75 decimal hours, about $716.63 gross.

Hours worked per day, week and year

Common schedules side by side, with the unpaid lunch already taken off. The yearly column assumes 52 working weeks, before any holidays or vacation.

Paid hours for common daily schedules after unpaid lunch. Weekly = 5 days; yearly = weekly × 52, before holidays and vacation.

Calculate hours worked in Excel or Google Sheets

Put the start time in B2, the end time in C2 and the unpaid break in minutes in D2. Times are stored as part of a day, which is why each formula multiplies by 24.

What you wantFormula
Hours worked with a lunch break=(C2-B2)*24-D2/60
Same, for shifts past midnight=MOD(C2-B2,1)*24-D2/60
Lunch out in E2 and back in F2=((C2-B2)-(F2-E2))*24
Total for a week in G2:G8=SUM(G2:G8)
Gross pay at the rate in H1=SUM(G2:G8)*H1

Mistakes that change the total

The grid starts with a 30-minute break on Monday to Friday, which catches people out on a half-day Friday with no lunch. Set the break to 0 on those days, or the week comes up short.

Only unpaid meal time belongs in the break box. Short rest breaks are usually paid and count as hours worked under federal rules. The break time calculator shows the difference for a single shift.

Writing 8:45 as 8.45 on a payroll form is the other classic. Minutes run to 60, so 8 hours 45 minutes is 8.75 hours. The .45 version pays for only 27 of those minutes.

Working hours questions

Timesheets, paychecks and part-time contracts raise most of these.

How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?

Take the start away from the end, then remove the unpaid lunch. Someone on 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is on the clock for 8 hours 30 minutes. A half-hour lunch brings that to a clean 8.

How many hours is 8am to 5pm with a 1-hour lunch?

Eight. The day spans 9 hours, and the hour for lunch is unpaid. So a Monday-to-Friday job on those hours is a standard 40-hour week.

How many hours is 7 to 3:30 with a 30-minute lunch?

Also 8. A warehouse shift from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes long. The unpaid half hour comes off. So five of them add up to 40 hours.

How do I work out hours worked for a week?

Fill in each day you worked and leave the rest blank, since blank days count as zero. The calculator adds the seven days into one weekly total, shown in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

Can the work hours calculator show my pay?

Type an hourly rate and it multiplies the decimal hours to give gross pay. That figure is before tax, so take-home pay will be lower. For overtime at time and a half, the overtime calculator splits regular and overtime hours.

How many work hours are in a year?

A 40-hour week over 52 weeks comes to 2,080 hours. That is the number most often used to turn an hourly rate into a yearly salary. Holidays and vacation bring the hours someone actually works below that.

How many hours is full time?

The US has no single legal definition. Most employers treat 35 to 40 hours a week as full time. The Affordable Care Act uses 30 hours a week, or 130 a month, for its health coverage rules.

What if a shift goes past midnight?

An end time earlier than the start is read as the next day, so 24 hours are added. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM counts as 8 hours before any break comes off.
