How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract unpaid breaks. For 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch: 8 hours 45 minutes minus 30 minutes is 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 decimal hours. Add the days for the weekly total; hours over 40 in a week are federal overtime.
The time card calculator does this for a whole week, including overnight shifts and rounding. Step by step: how to calculate work hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is ClockTotals free?
Yes. Every calculator and countdown is free with no sign-up. The calculators run in your browser, so the times, dates and pay rates you enter are not sent to us.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees are paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek (US Department of Labor). Some states add daily overtime, such as California after 8 hours in a day. The overtime calculator handles both.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60, so a quarter hour is 0.25, half an hour 0.5 and 45 minutes 0.75. A 7:45 shift goes on payroll as 7.75. The hours to decimal calculator converts any time and has a full table.
How many days until Christmas?
The Christmas countdown has the days, weeks, weekends and business days to go, and a live clock counting down to the midnight that starts Christmas Day, in your time zone. Halloween, Diwali, Easter and 240-odd other dates get one too.
How many working days are in a year?
Take the 261 weekdays of 2026, remove the 11 US federal holidays, and 250 working days are left, or 2,000 hours at 8 a day. The working days by year pages split that by month and cover the UK, Canada and Australia as well.
Where does the life expectancy data come from?
It comes from the 2024 US life tables published by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (CDC FastStats). The life expectancy by age pages give the average years left at each age; they aren't a forecast for any one person.
How many days are left in the year?
Today, November 3, 2026, there are 58 days left, which is 8 weeks and 2 days, and the year is about 84% over. The days left in the year counter moves on at each midnight, and there are pages for weeks remaining, full months left and the year progress percentage.
