Hours Until Calculator: How Many Hours Until a Time
Pick a date and a clock time. The box then shows the hours and minutes between right now and that moment. At 9:00 AM, 5:00 PM on the same day is 8 hours away. After 5:00 PM it counts to 5:00 PM tomorrow.
Use it for a time you pick yourself, like the end of a shift, a 7:15 AM train or a Friday deadline. Christmas, New Year's Eve and other set dates are on the hours until pages, with 5 PM and midnight too.
Quick answer: Subtract now from the target. Each full day in between is 24 hours. Add the leftover hours and minutes, and divide the minutes by 60 for decimal hours. So 2 days, 6 hours and 30 minutes is 54.5 hours.
How the hours are counted
The count runs from this minute, using the clock on your phone or computer. Both times are read as your local time. If the clocks go back one night before the target, that night has 25 hours and the total grows by one. The result gives days, hours and minutes, and the totals in hours and in minutes.
Worked example: a Friday flight
Say it is 9:30 AM on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, and a flight leaves at 5:00 PM on Friday, March 6. Both times are in the same time zone.
From 9:30 AM Tuesday to 9:30 AM Friday is exactly 3 days. That part is 3 × 24, or 72 hours. The rest of Friday morning and afternoon, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, adds 7 hours and 30 minutes.
Together that makes 79 hours and 30 minutes. Half an hour is 0.5 of an hour, so the decimal answer is 79.5 hours. In minutes it is 79.5 × 60, which is 4,770.
Result: 79.5 hours (3 days, 7 hours and 30 minutes, or 4,770 minutes).
Hours until 3 PM, 5 PM and midnight
Most people check the same few times of day. This table gives the gap from common starting times. When the target has already gone by, the figure runs to that time tomorrow, which is how the calculator counts too.
| Time now | Until 3:00 PM | Until 5:00 PM | Until midnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:00 AM | 8 h | 10 h | 17 h |
| 8:30 AM | 6 h 30 min | 8 h 30 min | 15 h 30 min |
| 10:45 AM | 4 h 15 min | 6 h 15 min | 13 h 15 min |
| 12:00 PM (noon) | 3 h | 5 h | 12 h |
| 1:15 PM | 1 h 45 min | 3 h 45 min | 10 h 45 min |
| 2:30 PM | 30 min | 2 h 30 min | 9 h 30 min |
| 4:00 PM | 23 h (tomorrow) | 1 h | 8 h |
| 6:00 PM | 21 h (tomorrow) | 23 h (tomorrow) | 6 h |
| 9:00 PM | 18 h (tomorrow) | 20 h (tomorrow) | 3 h |
Days to hours reference table
Multiply days by 24 for hours and by 1,440 for minutes. To go the other way, divide the hours by 24. For instance, 100 hours is 4 days and 4 hours.

Hours until a date in Excel or Google Sheets
Put the target date and time in cell B1, typed like 3/6/2026 17:00. In a sheet, 1 means one whole day and NOW() is the date and time this second. So B1 minus NOW() is a part of a day, and multiplying by 24 turns it into hours.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Hours until B1, as a decimal | =(B1-NOW())*24 |
| Whole hours until B1 | =INT((B1-NOW())*24) |
| Hours and minutes, like 79:30 | =TEXT(B1-NOW(),"[h]:mm") |
| Minutes until B1 | =(B1-NOW())*1440 |
| Hours until 5 PM (rolls to tomorrow after 5 PM) | =MOD(TIME(17,0,0)-MOD(NOW(),1),1)*24 |
Excel only refreshes NOW() when something changes or you press F9.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying days by 24 across a clock change. In most of the US, Sunday, March 8, 2026 has only 23 hours, and so does March 14, 2027. Sunday, November 1, 2026 has 25, and so does November 7, 2027.
- Mixing time zones. A 3:00 PM Eastern deadline is 12:00 PM Pacific. Convert the target to your own local time before you count.
- Confusing 12 AM and 12 PM. 12:00 AM is midnight at the start of a day, and 12:00 PM is noon. Picking the wrong one moves the answer by 12 hours.
- Reading decimal hours as minutes. 79.5 hours is 79 hours and 30 minutes, not 79 hours and 50 minutes. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes.
- Counting from midnight. Hours until starts from the current moment. A days-until count starts from midnight and leaves out the time of day.
Hours until questions
How many hours until 5 PM today?
At 10:45 AM it is 6 hours 15 minutes, or 6.25 hours. Once 5:00 PM has gone, the calculator counts to 5:00 PM tomorrow. A live clock for it sits on the hours until 5 PM page.
How many hours until midnight?
At 3:15 PM there are 8 hours and 45 minutes to go. Here you would pick tomorrow's date and 12:00 AM.
How many hours until tomorrow?
The same as until midnight, since that is when tomorrow starts. At 7:30 PM it is 4 hours and 30 minutes away. To count to 8:00 AM tomorrow, choose tomorrow's date and 8:00 AM.
How many hours until Friday?
Wednesday at 3:00 PM to Friday at 5:00 PM is 2 days and 2 hours, so 50 hours. Count the days, multiply by 24, then add the clock hours.
How many hours until Christmas?
Pick December 25 and the time 12:00 AM. That counts to the first minute of Christmas Day. The hours until Christmas page has the same countdown ready, with days and minutes too.
How do I work out minutes until a time?
Find the hours first, then multiply them by 60. So 2 hours and 15 minutes is 135 minutes. The result box here lists total minutes under the hours anyway.
What if the time has already passed?
A time from earlier today rolls to the same time tomorrow. At 6:00 PM, a 5:00 PM target gives 23 hours. A date in the past shows how many hours ago it was.
Why is this different from days until?
Days until works with whole dates and starts at midnight. This one looks at the clock as well, so it can say 3 hours and 10 minutes are left this afternoon.
Can I count to a time in another time zone?
Convert it first with the time zone converter, then type in your local time. A 9:00 AM call in London is 4:00 AM in New York for most of the year.
How many hours are in a day and a week?
A calendar day has 24 hours and a week has 168. Where daylight saving time is used, the day the clocks spring forward has 23 hours and the day they fall back has 25.
