Add Time Calculator: Add Hours to a Time
Enter a clock time and the hours and minutes to add, and this time calculator gives the new clock time. It also tells you when the answer lands on the next day. So 10:00 PM plus 3 hours shows 1:00 AM tomorrow. Switch to Subtract and 2:00 AM minus 5 hours shows 9:00 PM the day before. Adding up a list of durations, like 2:45 plus 3:20, is a different job for the hours and minutes calculator. For the gap between two clock times, see hours between two times.
The start time uses a 12-hour clock with AM and PM. The answer also shows the 24-hour version, which helps with shift rosters and travel plans.
Quick answer: To add time to a clock time, convert the start to minutes after midnight, add the duration in minutes, and divide by 1,440 (minutes in a day). The remainder is the new clock time; the whole number is how many days later. For example, 9:45 PM plus 7 hours 30 minutes is 5:15 AM the next day.
How adding time works
The calculator turns the start time into minutes after midnight. Then it adds or takes away the minutes in your duration. A day holds 1,440 minutes, so anything past that rolls into the next day. A result below zero goes back into the day before. Time zones are not changed here. For that, the time zone converter is the right page.
Worked example: a night drive that ends after midnight
A driver leaves at 9:45 PM for a trip that takes 7 hours and 30 minutes. Written in 24-hour time, the start is 21:45. That is 1,305 minutes after midnight, since 21 times 60 plus 45 gives 1,305.
The trip itself is 450 minutes long. Added to the start, the total is 1,755 minutes. A day only has 1,440 minutes, so the drive runs into the next day by 315 minutes.
Those 315 minutes split into 5 hours and 15 minutes. The driver arrives at 5:15 AM, which reads 05:15 on a 24-hour clock.
Result: 5:15 AM the next day.
What time was it hours ago, or what time will it be
People often want the time a few hours back or ahead of now. Pick Subtract for the past and Add for the future, then type the hours. The table below starts from 3:00 PM so you can check the pattern by eye.
| Hours | Hours ago (from 3:00 PM) | Hours from now (from 3:00 PM) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 2:00 PM | 4:00 PM |
| 2 hours | 1:00 PM | 5:00 PM |
| 3 hours | 12:00 PM (noon) | 6:00 PM |
| 5 hours | 10:00 AM | 8:00 PM |
| 6 hours | 9:00 AM | 9:00 PM |
| 7 hours | 8:00 AM | 10:00 PM |
| 8 hours | 7:00 AM | 11:00 PM |
| 9 hours | 6:00 AM | 12:00 AM (midnight) |
| 10 hours | 5:00 AM | 1:00 AM (next day) |
| 12 hours | 3:00 AM | 3:00 AM (next day) |
| 16 hours | 11:00 PM (day before) | 7:00 AM (next day) |
| 24 hours | 3:00 PM (day before) | 3:00 PM (next day) |
For a live answer from the current time, the hours until pages count down to set clock times such as 5 PM.
Duration reference table
| Duration | Minutes | Decimal hours | 9:00 AM plus duration |

| 15 minutes | 15 | 0.25 | 9:15 AM |
| 30 minutes | 30 | 0.50 | 9:30 AM |
| 45 minutes | 45 | 0.75 | 9:45 AM |
| 1 hour | 60 | 1.00 | 10:00 AM |
| 1 h 30 min | 90 | 1.50 | 10:30 AM |
| 2 hours | 120 | 2.00 | 11:00 AM |
| 4 hours | 240 | 4.00 | 1:00 PM |
| 6 hours | 360 | 6.00 | 3:00 PM |
| 8 hours | 480 | 8.00 | 5:00 PM |
| 8 h 30 min | 510 | 8.50 | 5:30 PM |
| 10 hours | 600 | 10.00 | 7:00 PM |
| 12 hours | 720 | 12.00 | 9:00 PM |
| 16 hours | 960 | 16.00 | 1:00 AM (next day) |
| 24 hours | 1,440 | 24.00 | 9:00 AM (next day) |
| 36 hours | 2,160 | 36.00 | 9:00 PM (next day) |
For durations longer than a day, enter the total hours: 36 hours after 9:00 AM is 9:00 PM the next day.
Add hours to a time in Excel or Google Sheets
Spreadsheets store a time as a fraction of a day, so 6:00 AM is 0.25. Put the start time in A2 and format the answer cell as time. The same formulas work in Google Sheets.
| What you want | Formula |
|---|---|
| Add 3 hours 30 minutes | =A2+TIME(3,30,0) |
| Subtract 5 hours, wrapping past midnight | =MOD(A2-TIME(5,0,0),1) |
| Add hours typed as a number in B2 | =A2+B2/24 |
| Add minutes typed in B2 | =A2+B2/1440 |
| Clock time only, dropping the day | =MOD(A2+B2/24,1) |
| 8 hours from now | =NOW()+TIME(8,0,0) |
TIME wraps anything past 24 hours (TIME(25,0,0) is 1:00 AM), so use =A2+B2/24 for longer spans. A negative time shows as #### in Excel, which is why the subtract formula wraps it with MOD.
Common mistakes
Minutes and decimals get mixed up most often. 1.5 hours means 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50. In the same way, 7:30 on a clock is 7.5 hours rather than 7.3. Payroll forms that want decimals can use the hours to decimal calculator.
Watch the day label on any answer past midnight. A nurse starting at 7:00 PM for 12 hours finishes at 7:00 AM the next day, not the same day. Keep 12 AM and 12 PM straight as well, since 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon.
The page does plain clock sums and ignores daylight saving time. In the US, clocks spring forward on the second Sunday in March. That night, 8 real hours after 10:00 PM ends at 7:00 AM on the wall clock, while the calculator says 6:00 AM.
The minutes box stops at 59, so enter 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes.
Time addition examples
On paper, add the minutes first and carry one hour for every 60. When the hour passes 12, the clock switches from AM to PM. After midnight it moves on to the next day.
| Start time | Add | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 8:15 AM | 30 minutes | 8:45 AM |
| 9:45 AM | 30 minutes | 10:15 AM |
| 11:34 AM | 45 minutes | 12:19 PM |
| 12:36 PM | 40 minutes | 1:16 PM |
| 1:53 PM | 15 minutes | 2:08 PM |
| 7:00 AM | 8 hours 30 minutes | 3:30 PM |
| 10:30 PM | 2 hours 45 minutes | 1:15 AM (next day) |
Adding and subtracting time: questions
How do I add hours to a time?
Count the hours forward on the clock and carry into the next day after midnight. 10:00 PM plus 3 hours is 1:00 AM the next day. The calculator does this for any start time and any number of hours.
What time will it be in 8 hours?
Add 8 hours to the time now. From 9:00 AM that gives 5:00 PM, and from 8:00 PM it gives 4:00 AM the next morning. Type your own start time above for an exact answer.
What time was it 6 hours ago?
Take 6 hours off the time now and step back a day if you pass midnight. At 3:00 AM, 6 hours ago was 9:00 PM the evening before. Choose Subtract and enter 6 hours to check any other time.
How do I subtract hours from a time?
Choose Subtract, enter the start time and type the hours and minutes. Working by hand, turn the time into minutes after midnight and take the duration away. Add 1,440 if the answer is below zero, so 2:00 AM minus 5 hours is 9:00 PM the day before.
How do I add hours and minutes to a time?
Add the minutes first and carry every 60 of them into the hours. Then add the hours. 1:53 PM plus 15 minutes is 2:08 PM, and 10:30 PM plus 2 hours 45 minutes is 1:15 AM the next day.
What is 30 minutes after 9:45?
It is 10:15. The minutes come to 75, which is one hour and 15 minutes, so the hour moves on from 9 to 10.
How do I add time in Excel?
Put the start time in A2 and use =A2+TIME(3,30,0) to add 3 hours 30 minutes. Format the result cell as a time. For hours typed as a plain number in B2, =A2+B2/24 works for any length.
Can I add a list of times together?
Not on this page, which adds one duration to one clock time. To total several durations, such as shift lengths for a week, use the hours and minutes calculator.
Is 12:00 AM midnight or noon?
12:00 AM is midnight, the very start of the day. 12:00 PM is noon. A shift from 4:00 PM plus 8 hours therefore ends at 12:00 AM.
How do I convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time?
For hours 13 to 23, take away 12 and add PM. Hour 00 becomes 12 AM and hour 12 stays 12 PM, so 21:45 is 9:45 PM. The military time converter has a full chart.
