Months Until Calculator (Months Between Dates)
Pick a date and see how many months are left from today. The answer comes in whole calendar months, then the extra days. October 9 to December 25 is 2 months and 16 days, which is 77 days. A moving date, a wedding or a birthday are typical targets for this month calculator. Add a From date to count the months between two dates instead. Christmas and other holidays already have their own months until pages.
The months left calculator runs to December 31, and the weeks until and days until pages count the same gap in other units.
Quick answer: Start at today and step forward one calendar month at a time. Stop when the next step would go past the target, then count the days that are left. September 29 to December 25 is 2 months and 26 days. Months run from 28 to 31 days, so dividing the days by 30 is only an estimate.
How months until a date are counted
Each step keeps the same day number, so a step from the 20th lands on the 20th of the next month. When that day does not exist, the step lands on the last day of the shorter month. A step from January 31 goes to February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. The days between the last step and the target are the remainder. This is why the answer can differ from the total days divided by 30.44.
Worked example: a lease that ends at Christmas
Suppose a lease starts on May 20, 2026 and the tenant moves out on December 25. The landlord wants to know how many months that covers. In the calculator, that is May 20, 2026 in From and December 25, 2026 as the target.
Stepping a month at a time from May 20 gives June 20, July 20, August 20 and so on. The seventh step lands on December 20. The next one, January 20, would pass December 25, so the count stops at 7 months.
From December 20 to December 25 is 5 more days. Over the whole stay there are 219 calendar days. Dividing 219 by 30.44 gives about 7.2 months, which is close but not exact.
Result: 7 months and 5 days (219 days in total).

Months between dates in Excel or Google Sheets
Put the start date in A2 and the end date in B2. DATEDIF works in both Excel and Google Sheets, even though Excel leaves it out of its formula list.

DATEDIF only counts a month once the day number is reached. From January 31 to February 28 it returns 0 months, while this calculator counts 1 month because February has no 31st. Expect small differences near the end of a month.
Common mistakes
- Dividing days by 30. 87 days ÷ 30 = 2.9, which sounds like almost 3 months. September 29 to December 25 is really 2 whole months and 26 days.
- Counting month names. October 1 to January 1 touches four month names but is exactly 3 months. Count the steps between the dates, not the months you can see.
- Ignoring month ends. From January 31, one month lands on February 28 (or 29) because February has no 31st. Some tools report 0 months and 28 days instead, so results can differ near the end of a month.
- Mixing up “until” and “left in the year.” Months until a date stops at that date. Months left in the year always runs to December 31.
- Forgetting the leap day. A span that includes February 29 has one more day in total, even when the month count is the same.

How many months are there between two dates?
Add one calendar month at a time to the start date until another step would pass the end date. The number of steps is the whole months. The days from the last step to the end date are the remainder. January 15 to March 10, 2026 is 1 month and 23 days. Here, put the first date in the From box and the second as the target.
How many months until Christmas?
Use the Christmas preset, or open the months until Christmas countdown. From today, October 16, Christmas Day is 2 months and 9 days away. The number updates each day.
How many months until June?
Set the target to June 1. If June has already started this year, pick June 1 of next year. The result shows whole months, extra days and the total days from today.
How many months until December?
Set the target to December 1. For the full months up to the end of December, use months left in the year instead.
How many months until my birthday?

What date is 6 months from today?
Add 6 calendar months and keep the day number. 6 months from October 9 is April 9. The months from today pages show the exact dates for common amounts.
How many months is 100 days?
About 3.3 months, since 100 ÷ 30.44 is 3.29. In calendar months it depends on the start date. January 1, 2026 plus 100 days is April 11, which is 3 months and 10 days.
How many weeks is 3 months?
About 13 weeks. Any three months in a row hold 89 to 92 days. That is 12 weeks and 5 days at the short end and 13 weeks and 1 day at the long end.
How many days are in a month on average?
A Gregorian year averages 365.2425 days, so the average month is about 30.44 days. Real months have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.
What happens if the date has already passed?
The result is labeled “That date has passed.” Whole months and extra days show as negative numbers, and total days shows how long ago it was.
