About St Andrew's Day
Part of St Andrew's shoulder blade is kept at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh. The Archbishop of Amalfi, where many of Andrew's bones had been taken after Crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204, gave it in 1879, and it was first carried in procession on St Andrew's Day that year. Pope Paul VI added a second relic in 1969, and the two now form the National Shrine of St Andrew.
Andrew was a Galilean fisherman, the brother of Simon Peter, and tradition says he died at Patras in Greece on an X-shaped cross. That cross is the white saltire on Scotland's flag. A legend places its first sighting in the sky over Athelstaneford in East Lothian in 832, before a Pictish victory. A Saltire flies there all year round in the churchyard, and a 16th-century doocot next door houses the Scottish Flag Heritage Centre, which opens specially on November 30.
