How the split workweek keeps 2028 at 40 hours a week
Here's the split with group A's dates. Friday, January 28, 2028 is a working Friday of 8 hours. If the workweek starts halfway through that shift (noon for an 8 a.m. start), its last 4 hours go into the new week. That week then adds 36 hours from Monday, January 31, 2028 to Thursday, February 3, 2028, and nothing on Friday, February 4, 2028, the day off, for a total of 40.
The next workweek starts at noon on February 4, 2028. It picks up 36 hours from February 7, 2028 to February 10, 2028 and the first 4 hours of Friday, February 11, 2028, which is 40 again. Under 29 CFR 778.105 a workweek can start on any day and at any hour, but it has to stay fixed; an employer can change it only if the change is meant to be permanent and isn't made to dodge overtime. With a plain Sunday-to-Saturday week the weeks come out at 44 and 36 hours instead, and the 4 extra hours are paid at time and a half.
Compared with a 4/10 schedule, which gives every Friday off with 10-hour days, a 9/80 gives every other Friday off with 9-hour days. In California, either one needs an adopted alternative workweek schedule to avoid daily overtime after 8 hours.
9/80 Fridays off in Excel or Google Sheets
Put one of your off Fridays in cell B1 and a column of dates from A2 down. This formula marks every other Friday off and leaves the rest blank:

WEEKDAY returns 6 for a Friday with its default settings, and the MOD part is 0 only on dates a whole number of fortnights from B1, so the other group's Fridays stay blank.
