The rotation, crew by crew
| Crew | Mo 1 | Tu 2 | We 3 | Th 4 | Fr 5 | Sa 6 | Su 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crew A | Day | Day | Day | Day | โ | โ | โ |
| Crew B | โ | โ | โ | Day | Day | Day | Day |
A 4/10 is 40 hours a week in four days, so the standard week has no overtime under federal law. With two crews, as shown here, crew A works Monday to Thursday and crew B Thursday to Sunday, covering all seven days with Thursday as an overlap day for meetings or training (many police departments use a Wednesday overlap instead; set the start date to match). In California, a 10-hour day normally earns 2 hours of daily overtime unless the employer has adopted an alternative workweek schedule by a secret-ballot vote of two-thirds of the affected employees (California Labor Code section 511).
You get a three-day weekend every week, or three days off in a row if you're on the late crew, and the same 40 hours as five 8-hour days. Each workday is two hours longer, and that can make childcare and commuting harder.
Hours and days off
- Cycle length: 7 days
- Shifts per cycle: 4 (10 hours each)
- Average hours per week: 40
- Shifts per year: about 208.6 (2,086 hours)
- Longest run of shifts: 4; longest break: 3 days
Weekly hours and overtime on the 4/10 schedule
Every payroll week on this schedule has the same 40 hours, whichever day the week starts on, because the cycle is exactly one week long. So there's no federal overtime in a normal week.
Crew A gets every weekend off. Taking 2 shifts as vacation in the right spot gives 5 days in a row away from work.
The overtime calculator works out the pay for any single week.
4/10 schedule in Excel or Google Sheets
In Excel or Google Sheets, put crew A's first day in cell B1 and a column of dates from A2 down. This formula in B2, filled down, shows D for a working day or a dash for a day off:
=MID("DDDD---",MOD(A2-$B$1,7)+1,1)
The text in quotes is one character per day of the 7-day cycle. For crew B, which starts 3 days later, subtract 3 more inside the MOD, as in MOD(A2-$B$1-3,7). MOD gives a result from 0 up to 6 in both programs, even for dates before the start date.
4/10 schedule questions
How does the 4/10 schedule work?
Every crew runs the same 7-day cycle (work four 10-hour days, then 3 days off, every week). The crews start it on different days, and that's how the site stays covered.
How many hours a week is the 4/10 schedule?
It averages 40 hours a week, since each crew works 4 shifts of 10 hours in every 7 days. Every week comes out the same.
How many days a year do you work on a 4/10 schedule?
About 208.6 shifts, which comes to 2,086 hours over a year.
What is the difference between the Pitman, Panama and DuPont schedules?
All three use four crews on 12-hour shifts. Pitman is the 2-2-3 pattern over 14 days with each crew on fixed days or nights; Panama is the same 2-2-3 pattern with crews swapping between days and nights; DuPont is a 28-day cycle that mixes day and night blocks and ends with 7 days off in a row.
