Juneteenth remembers June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger read an order in Galveston, Texas, freeing the enslaved people of the state. It came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth National Independence Day, after Texas had kept it since 1980.
