Armed Forces Day was first held on 27 June 2009, taking over from Veterans' Day, which had run since 2006. It's kept on the last Saturday in June and covers serving troops, reservists, veterans, cadets and service families alike.

The first national event was at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, Cardiff hosted in 2010 and Edinburgh in 2011, and the national event usually moves to a new town or city each year. Elsewhere, councils and local groups put on their own parades, flypasts and displays, and some councils fly the Armed Forces Day flag over the town hall in the last week of June.
