About the Boston Marathon

Heartbreak Hill, the last of the Newton climbs at around mile 20, got its name from a Boston Globe reporter in 1936. The course has started in Hopkinton since 1924 and runs 26.2 miles east through Framingham, Natick and Wellesley to the finish on Boylston Street. The very first race, in 1897, began in Ashland, and John J. McDermott of New York won it in 2:55:10 against 14 others.

Boston is one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, and the field is capped at about 30,000, with charity teams and invited runners alongside the qualifiers. Women had no official place in it until 1972. Bobbi Gibb ran unregistered in 1966, and the next year Kathrine Switzer entered as "K.V. Switzer" and kept going after official Jock Semple tried to pull her off the course. Her bib, 261, was retired in 2017. The Red Sox play a morning game at Fenway on race day.
