About the Day of Arafah

Masjid Namirah, on the western edge of the plain of Arafat, holds congregational prayer only once a year. Around noon on this day an imam gives the Arafah sermon from its pulpit, then leads the midday and afternoon prayers joined together and shortened, as the Prophet Muhammad prayed there during his Farewell Pilgrimage in 632. The front part of the mosque lies in the valley of Uranah, outside the boundary of Arafat, so pilgrims have to do their standing elsewhere on the plain.

Umar ibn al-Khattab later said that Quran 5:3, "This day I have perfected your religion for you," was revealed on the afternoon of Arafah, on a Friday. After sunset the pilgrims leave for Muzdalifah, between Arafat and Mina, where they pray the sunset and night prayers together and gather the pebbles they will throw at the Jamarat pillars over the following days.
