About Earth Day
Leaders and envoys from more than 170 countries lined up at UN headquarters in New York on Earth Day 2016 to sign the Paris climate agreement. By evening 175 parties had signed, the most for any international agreement on its first day, and 15 of them, Fiji, Palau and Tuvalu among them, handed in their ratifications on the spot.
The first Earth Day, in 1970, owed a lot to an oil spill. Gaylord Nelson visited the blackened coast near Santa Barbara in the summer of 1969 and proposed a teach-in modeled on the anti-war ones then running on college campuses, with Republican congressman Pete McCloskey as his co-chair. In Manhattan that April, Mayor John Lindsay shut Fifth Avenue to traffic for two hours, and 14th Street between Third and Seventh Avenues was turned into an "ecological carnival."

About this count
Each midnight takes one off the 186. Today is left out and April 22 itself is counted, so on Wednesday, April 21 the page will show 1 day to go. US clocks go back on Sunday, November 1 and forward again on Sunday, March 14, 2027, which changes the hours but not the number of days.
In Excel or Google Sheets, =DATE(2027,4,22)-TODAY() gives the same 186 today; add 1 to count today as well.
This countdown to Earth Day 2027 was worked out on Sunday, October 18, 2026 (US Eastern time), and your browser recounts it from your own date when the page opens.
