About Mexican Independence Day

Miguel Hidalgo, a parish priest, rang the bell of his church in Dolores before dawn on September 16, 1810 and told the townspeople to rise against Spain. Mexicans call that moment the Grito de Dolores. He was shot by a firing squad the following year, and it took until 1821 for the country to win its independence.

These days the celebrating starts late on September 15. The President steps onto the National Palace balcony, rings Hidalgo's bell and leads the crowd in the Zócalo in three shouts of "Viva México", and town squares around the country hold their own Grito. Pozole and chiles en nogada are on many tables. On the 16th a military parade sets off from the Zócalo. It's a paid day off under the Federal Labor Law, and it has nothing to do with Cinco de Mayo, which marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla.
