About Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is Munich's beer festival on the Theresienwiese, first held in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. It opens at noon on a Saturday, when the mayor taps the first keg and calls out "O'zapft is!" It ends on the first Sunday in October, or on October 3 if that is later. Most years that makes it 16 days long, and 17 or 18 when it runs on to German Unity Day. This page counts to the opening day. Only six Munich breweries can serve beer in the tents: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. The first Sunday brings a long parade of costume groups, riflemen and bands. It isn't a public holiday.

How this is calculated

Each midnight takes one off the number. Today is left out and the day itself is counted, so tomorrow shows as 1 day away. Clock changes for daylight saving make no difference.

In Excel or Google Sheets, type =DATE(2027,9,18)-TODAY() into a cell to get the same count; add 1 to include today.

Counted from Saturday, October 17, 2026 (US Eastern time). When you open the page, it counts again from the date on your device, so it matches your own day.
