About Orthodox Easter
Orthodox Easter, or Pascha, is the main feast of the year for Orthodox Christians in Greece, Cyprus, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Georgia. It follows 40 days of Great Lent, when many people give up meat, fish and dairy. The church date is worked out with the old Julian calendar, which is why it is usually later than Western Easter.
The main service starts late on Holy Saturday. At midnight the lights go out, a flame is passed from candle to candle, and people say "Christ is risen." Families then break the fast. On Sunday Greeks roast lamb on a spit, and people crack red-dyed eggs against each other. Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia close for Good Friday and Easter Monday.
