About St. Patrick's Day
Chicago's green river began with a pair of stained coveralls. In 1961 Stephen Bailey, business manager of the city's plumbers union, noticed the green on a worker who had been using dye to trace leaks and wastewater, and he had the idea of turning the Chicago River green. Bailey was a friend of Mayor Richard J. Daley, and the union first dyed the river in 1962. Union plumbers still do it, with a vegetable-based powder that looks orange until it hits the water. The formula is kept secret.
Patrick's own account of his life is far less festive. In the Confessio he writes that he was captured at about 16 and spent six years as a slave in Ireland. He escaped to a ship almost two hundred miles away, and years later dreamed that the Irish were calling him back. A procession in Spanish St. Augustine, Florida, in 1601 is the oldest St. Patrick's Day parade on record.
