About World Food Day

Delegates met at the Château Frontenac in Quebec City in 1945 to found the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Food Day marks that founding. The idea for the day came from Hungary. Its delegation, led by former agriculture and food minister Pál Romány, put it to FAO's 20th conference, which adopted it in November 1979. The UN General Assembly backed it the following year.

FAO started out in Washington, D.C., and moved its headquarters to Rome in 1951. The main ceremony is held there now, and around 150 countries take part. Each year gets its own theme, which tends to come back to hunger, healthy diets, water or farming. Food banks often time collection drives to the date, and many schools use it for a lesson on where food comes from.
