About World Press Freedom Day

May 3 is the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a call for a free and independent press drawn up by African journalists at a UNESCO seminar in Namibia in 1991. In December 1993, on UNESCO's recommendation, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the date World Press Freedom Day. It's a day to look at threats to journalists and to remember those killed for their work.

Since 1997 UNESCO has awarded the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize around the date. Cano ran El Espectador in Colombia and was shot dead outside the paper's Bogotá offices in 1986. Reporters Without Borders usually publishes its World Press Freedom Index in the same week.
