About World Tourism Day
September 27 was chosen because the statutes of what's now UN Tourism were adopted on that date in 1970. Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi, a Nigerian, first proposed marking it at a meeting in Ankara in 1971, and the first World Tourism Day was held in 1980. For most of its life the agency was called the UN World Tourism Organization, or UNWTO. It's based in Madrid and has 160 member states.
Since 1997 one member country has hosted the official celebration each year, and there's a theme. Saudi Arabia hosted in 2023, Georgia in 2024, Malaysia in 2025, in the old trading port of Melaka, and El Salvador in 2026. Ministers give speeches and hand out awards, while tourism boards and travel colleges elsewhere hold talks of their own.
