About Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving goes back to a harvest feast at Plymouth in the fall of 1621, when 53 Pilgrims and about 90 Wampanoag men led by Massasoit ate together over three days. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks in 1863. Franklin Roosevelt moved it a week earlier in 1939 to stretch the Christmas shopping season, and in 1941 Congress fixed it to the fourth Thursday of November.
The meal is the heart of the day, with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Federal offices, banks, schools, post offices and the stock market close. Target and Costco shut too, and Walmart has closed every Thanksgiving since 2020, so in-store Black Friday sales start the next morning. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, first held in 1924, fills Manhattan in the morning, and the NFL plays three games, with Detroit and Dallas at home. Canada's Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October.
