Monday holidays
Monday gets more US federal holidays than any other day of the week, on purpose. Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968. From 1971 it put Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day and Columbus Day on Mondays, which gave federal workers more three-day weekends. In the next 12 months 6 federal holidays fall on a Monday, the first being Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 18.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day are Mondays every year. A holiday with a fixed date, such as Independence Day, only becomes a Monday holiday when the date is a Monday, or a Sunday, since the day off then moves to Monday. Cyber Monday (November 30, 2026) is for shopping, and offices stay open. Most UK bank holidays are on Mondays too.
How to count Mondays by hand
Find the first Monday after today and the day before the holiday. Count the days from one to the other, divide by 7, ignore the remainder, then add 1.
Take Thanksgiving. The first Monday is Oct 19 and the day before Thanksgiving is Nov 25, 37 days later. 37 ÷ 7 = 5 remainder 2, and 5 + 1 = 6, the number in the table.
With a paper calendar you can just run a finger down the Monday column. Next year the answer can change, because a date moves one weekday later each year, or two after a February 29.
