About the Day of the Dead
On Day of the Dead, or DĂa de los Muertos, families in Mexico welcome back the spirits of relatives who have died. November 1 is usually for children, called the angelitos, and November 2 is for adults. Homes put up an ofrenda, an altar with photos, candles, orange cempasĂşchil marigolds, pan de muerto, sugar skulls and the person's favorite food.
Families also clean and decorate graves. In Pátzcuaro in Michoacán and Mixquic in Mexico City, people stay in the cemetery all night. UNESCO put it on its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008. November 2 is not a mandatory rest day under Mexico's Federal Labor Law, so when it falls on a weekday most businesses open. The SEP school calendar sometimes gives pupils the day off, as in the 2026-27 school year, and many schools set up an ofrenda that week.
