How Many Days Until Kwanzaa 2026?

When is Kwanzaa 2026?

Kwanzaa 2026 is on Saturday, December 26, 2026. In the United States it is held on December 26 every year, so only the weekday changes. The 2027 date is Sunday, December 26.

About Kwanzaa

The Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza means "first fruits," and Maulana Karenga built a harvest theme into Kwanzaa when he created it in Los Angeles in 1966, a year after the Watts uprising. Bowls of fruit and vegetables and ears of corn are laid out on a straw mat called the mkeka. A unity cup is shared, and homemade gifts are given to children. The extra "a" in the name, Karenga has said, let seven children at the first celebration each stand for one letter.

At the center of the table is the kinara. Karenga's first one was a Hanukkah menorah with two branches removed, and the first purpose-made kinara, a log with holes drilled in it, came a year later. Its black center candle, for the people, is lit first, then the three red ones for struggle and the three green ones for the future, in line with the seven principles, the Nguzo Saba.
