What Are Business Days? And How Long Is 3–5 Business Days?

By Sohail Manzoor · Updated

Business days run Monday to Friday, and public holidays don't count. Say you order something today, Thursday, October 29, 2026, and the shop promises 3–5 business days. Friday is day one, the weekend is skipped, so it should turn up between Tuesday, November 3, 2026 and Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Turn a business-day promise into dates

Missed the cutoff? Lots of shops stop processing at 2 or 3 p.m., so tick the box if you ordered after that. The count then starts a business day later.

Common delivery windows from today

Shops and banks tend to quote one of these windows. We've counted each one from Thursday, October 29, 2026, skipping weekends and US federal holidays, so you can see the earliest and latest date side by side.

What counts as a business day?

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays don't count. In the US that means the 11 federal holidays, from New Year's Day to Christmas. Banks go by the Federal Reserve's calendar, and there's one quirk: when a holiday lands on a Saturday, federal offices take the Friday off, but the Federal Reserve banks stay open. Plenty of shops and couriers slow down the day after Thanksgiving too, though it isn't a federal holiday.

Business days vs calendar days

Calendar days count every day. Business days skip the weekend, so 5 business days is usually a full week, and 10 is two weeks. A holiday in the middle adds a day. That's why a 30-day return window and a 20-business-day deadline aren't the same thing: the second one runs about four weeks.

Does the day you order count?

In most shipping estimates, no. The clock starts the first business day after the seller processes your order, so an order placed on a Thursday morning has Friday as day one. Order on a weekend or a holiday, or after the cutoff, and day one slides to the business day after that. Remember the estimate usually covers the trip, not the packing, so check whether a shop adds its own handling time on top.

Business days questions

Is Saturday a business day?

Normally, no. Saturday deliveries do happen with some carriers, so a parcel can arrive early, but nobody counts Saturday as a business day. Banks are the same, which is why a transfer you send on Friday night usually shows up Monday.

How long is 3–5 business days?

Give it about a week. Ordered today, it should arrive somewhere between Tuesday, November 3, 2026 and Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the weekend in the middle is why that's 7 calendar days rather than 5.

How many calendar days is 10 business days?

Usually 14, so two full weeks. If there's a holiday in the way, make it 15. This time there is one: from October 29, 10 business days takes you to Friday, November 13, 2026, because Veterans Day on November 11 gets skipped.

Do business days include holidays?

No, holidays get skipped the same way weekends do. In the US that means federal holidays, in the UK bank holidays, and in Canada and Australia their own public holidays. So a parcel promised in 3 business days over Christmas can easily take a week.
