About Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is a festival for the sun god Surya and Chhathi Maiya. It is kept mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Nepal's Terai. It falls on the sixth day of the bright half of Kartik, six days after Diwali.

It lasts four days. Day one, Nahay Khay, starts with a ritual bath. On day two, Kharna, devotees fast until sunset and then eat kheer made with jaggery. A 36-hour fast without water starts after that meal. On day three, the date on this page, they stand in a river or pond and offer arghya to the setting sun. The fast ends after the sunrise offering on day four. Schools and government offices in Bihar and Jharkhand close.
