About Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is a US folk tradition held every February 2. The big one is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where Punxsutawney Phil is lifted from his stump on Gobbler's Knob around sunrise. A shadow means six more weeks of winter, by the old folk rule. No shadow means an early spring. It grew out of Candlemas weather sayings brought over by German immigrants, and the Punxsutawney ceremony started in 1887.
Groundhog Day is not a public holiday. Since the 1993 Bill Murray film, crowds of thousands stand on the hill in the dark to wait for Phil.
