When is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026?

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026 is on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. In Sikh communities worldwide it falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Kartik, usually in November, so the date moves from year to year; the dates below come from published calendars. The 2027 date is Sunday, November 14. It's also called Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak's Birthday.

Date may vary. The date follows the lunisolar calendar (Kartik Purnima). The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee announces the date each year, and it can occasionally differ.

About Guru Nanak Jayanti

Sikhs tell how the teenage Nanak, sent to market at Chuharkana with 20 rupees from his father, never got there. He met people who had gone without food and spent the whole sum feeding them. He went home empty-handed and called it a sacha sauda, a true bargain. Gurdwara Sacha Sauda marks the place, in what is now Farooqabad, Pakistan, and Sikhs see the story as the start of langar, the free kitchen every gurdwara runs.

Prakash means light, and for Prakash Purab gurdwaras and Sikh homes are lit with lamps and strings of bulbs. In the days before, congregations go out on prabhat pheris, walking the streets at dawn and singing hymns. Nankana Sahib, his birthplace near Lahore, draws the largest crowd of the year, including Sikh pilgrims who cross from India on special visas.
