About Inauguration Day

The 20th Amendment ends the old term at noon on January 20, and inaugurations have been held on that date since 1937. Before then, presidents were sworn in on March 4. Reagan moved the ceremony to the west front of the Capitol in 1981, and it has mostly stayed there, with crowds filling the National Mall, though bitter cold pushed it indoors to the Rotunda in 1985 and again in 2025. The Chief Justice usually reads the 35-word oath, and the new president repeats it line by line.

Afterward the new president traditionally rides down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House in the inaugural parade. Federal workers in Washington, D.C., and the nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs get the day off, but it isn't a holiday anywhere else. When January 20 is a Sunday, the oath is taken privately and the public ceremony is held on Monday.
