About International Literacy Day

UNESCO proclaimed International Literacy Day at its General Conference in October 1966, and the first one was held on September 8, 1967. The idea was to treat reading and writing as a human right and the base for all other learning. UNESCO still counts at least 739 million young people and adults without basic literacy skills, and about two-thirds of adults who can't read are women.

On the day, UNESCO hands out its International Literacy Prizes to adult reading programs, among them the King Sejong Literacy Prize, named after the Korean king who created the Hangul alphabet. Libraries, schools and charities run reading drives and book donations. It's a UN observance rather than a public holiday, so nobody gets the day off.
