About Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is the biggest of the year's Shivaratri nights, kept for the god Shiva in February or March. It falls on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight of Phalguna, or Magha in South Indian calendars. Dates here are for New Delhi.

Devotees fast during the day, and many stay awake all night at temples. The night is split into four prahars, each with its own puja. In each one the Shiva lingam is bathed with milk, water and honey and offered bilva leaves. Big crowds gather at Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi and at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu. It is a public holiday in Nepal and many Indian states. The fast is broken the next morning.
