About Matariki
Matariki is a star cluster, also called the Pleiades, that rises again just before dawn in the middle of winter. Its return starts the Māori New Year. The first Matariki public holiday was in 2022. A law passed that year fixes the dates out to 2052.
Many people get up before dawn to see the stars, remember the people they lost that year and share a meal. Some iwi, mainly in Taranaki and Whanganui, follow the star Puanga instead. Banks and schools close, but most shops stay open, and people who work get time and a half and a day in lieu.
