About Navratri

Sharad Navratri is nine nights of worship for the goddess Durga, with each day given to one of her nine forms. It starts with ghatasthapana, when a clay pot of water is set up and barley is sown beside it. Many Hindus fast for some or all of the nine days, skipping grains, onion and garlic and eating sabudana and kuttu flour dishes instead.

In Gujarat people dance garba and dandiya raas late into the night. In West Bengal the last five days are Durga Puja, with huge pandals in Kolkata. Many families feed young girls in kanya pujan on Ashtami or Navami. Dussehra comes on the tenth day. The first day of Navratri is not a public holiday, so banks and offices stay open, but Dussehra is.

How this is calculated

Each midnight takes one off the number. Today is left out and the day itself is counted, so tomorrow shows as 1 day away. Clock changes for daylight saving make no difference.

In Excel or Google Sheets, type =DATE(2027,9,30)-TODAY() into a cell to get the same count; add 1 to include today.

Counted from Friday, October 16, 2026 (US Eastern time). When you open the page, it counts again from the date on your device, so it matches your own day.
