About Orthodox Good Friday

Holy and Great Friday is the Orthodox Good Friday, two days before Orthodox Easter. It usually falls later than the Western one, since the Orthodox churches still use the Julian calendar to work out Easter. It's a strict fast day with no Divine Liturgy, and in the morning churches read the Royal Hours, which go back over the Passion Gospels.

In the evening churches hold the service of lamentations around the epitaphios, a carved bier covered in flowers that represents Christ's tomb. In Greece, women decorate it during the day, and after dark it's carried through the streets by candlelight, often led by a band. Flags fly at half-mast. It's a public holiday in Cyprus, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. In Greece, Great Friday is a day off for the public sector and shops stay shut until 1 p.m., while Russia treats it as a normal working day.
