About St Brigid's Day

Brigid founded a convent at Kildare around 480, and she's one of Ireland's three patron saints, along with Patrick and Columba. Her feast, February 1, sits on top of Imbolc, the old Gaelic start of spring, when the ewes came into milk. After a long campaign by the group Herstory, the government announced the holiday in January 2022. The first one was February 6, 2023, and it's the first Irish public holiday named after a woman.

It's the first Monday in February, unless February 1 is a Friday. Then the Friday gets it. The night before, families twist rushes into St Brigid's crosses to hang over the door, and some leave a strip of cloth outside for Brigid to bless as she passes.
