90 Minute Timer

Ready: ninety minutes.

Press Start for 90 minutes: a full soccer match, or roughly one sleep cycle.

What a 90 minute timer is good for

Football, for one: 45 minutes a half, so the match itself is 90 before stoppage time. Then sleep. One cycle of light, deep and dream sleep takes around 90 minutes on average, though it can run anywhere from 70 to 120. That is why some nappers set 90 rather than 60. They wake near the end of a cycle, not in the middle of deep sleep.

Long focus blocks work too: ninety minutes with the door shut, then a real break away from the desk. It is also about the length of a typical feature film, and of plenty of university seminars.

Good to know

Two 90-minute blocks fit neatly into a working morning: 9:00 to 10:30, a half-hour break, then 11:00 to 12:30.
